Belgium has many beautiful natural areas that invite you to hike, but the only downside is the many ticks that roam these green spots. The ticks in Belgium pose a significant risk, just like in the Netherlands, and they are sometimes infected with the Borrelia virus. This increases the chance that a tick bite could transmit Lyme disease.

Belgium and Lyme Disease

In various nature areas in Belgium, people regularly contract Lyme disease. This disease is characterized by a red circular spot at the site of the tick bite and causes fever and flu-like symptoms. In a later stage, it can cause joint pain, affect the nervous system, and sometimes the heart. In rare cases, Lyme can even be fatal. The disease is treatable with a course of antibiotics.

Risk Areas in Belgium

Generally, ticks can be found everywhere in Belgium in places with lots of greenery. However, there are a few areas where it has been proven that significantly more people contract Lyme disease from a tick bite. The Antwerp Kempen, Limburg Kempen, East Cantons, the Sonian Forest, and the Ardennes are named as risk areas. Therefore, it is wise to take extra precautions in these areas.
