Austria is a country with beautiful natural areas and mountains. Therefore, it is a very popular destination for hikers and cyclists. However, visiting the Austrian nature comes with its risks. Austria is full of ticks that can be infected with the virus that causes Lyme disease or Tick-borne encephalitis. So be very careful in Austria!

Tick-borne Encephalitis/FSME in Austria

People planning a hiking or camping holiday in Austria are advised to get vaccinated against Tick-borne encephalitis, also known as FSME. This virus is spread by ticks, which are common in the forested areas of Central and Eastern Europe. FSME can cause meningitis. Many people who become infected with this virus often don't even realize it initially. Symptoms of the disease usually appear a week after the tick bite. Tick-borne encephalitis often begins with flu-like symptoms and fever. About one-third of patients also experience headaches and meningitis. Other symptoms include dizziness and stiffness in the neck, back, and shoulders. One percent of patients die from the effects of FSME.

Lyme Disease in Austria

As in the Netherlands, there are many ticks in Austria that are infected with the Borrelia bacterium. These ticks can transmit Lyme disease to humans through their bites, which in very rare cases can have fatal consequences. Lyme disease is difficult to treat and can cause serious symptoms, so be vigilant. Regularly check if you have ticks on your body and remove a tick immediately if you find one.

Vaccination for a Holiday in Austria

If you are going on holiday to Austria for more than four weeks and planning to explore nature, it is wise to get vaccinated against Tick-borne encephalitis/FSME. Especially if you are going between March and November, as ticks are most active during this period. During a winter sports holiday, you don't have to worry so much about ticks in Austria. The vaccination consists of three injections. It's best to get the first injection six months before your holiday, as the effectiveness is better then. However, it is also possible to start the vaccination three weeks before departure.
