Lyme disease is caused by a tick bite. A tick is an arachnid creature that attaches itself to the skin of humans and animals. The tick is the carrier of the Borrelia Burgdorferi bacteria which causes Lyme disease. The initial symptoms of Lyme disease are flu-like complaints such as headaches and muscle aches. This is why Lyme disease is not immediately suspected. Visiting a doctor after a tick bite is important. The doctor needs to determine, based on probability, whether these complaints are indeed indications of Lyme disease or should be attributed to another illness.

Residual Symptoms

After treatment with antibiotics, recovery is generally good. However, residual symptoms may develop. Examples of these include fatigue, recurring flu-like symptoms, sweating, increased body temperature, and pain in muscles and joints, back, neck, headaches, and nerve pains. In practice, it appears that many patients with Lyme disease require treatment lasting up to four years. Nevertheless, chronic symptoms such as mood swings, concentration issues, memory problems, or psychiatric conditions can still occur.
